How do each of these roles participate in the Mass?

Definitions according to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops unless noted.

Altar Server: Girls and boys who have been baptized and received First Communion and are at least in third grade can be Atlar Servers. “Servers carry the cross, the processional candles, hold the book for the priest celebrant when he is not at the altar, carry the incense and censer, present the bread, wine, and water to the priest during the preparation of the gifts or assist him when he receives the gifts from the people, wash the hands of the priest, assist the priest celebrant and deacon as necessary.”

Lector:The lector is instituted to proclaim the readings from Sacred Scripture, with the exception of the Gospel. He may also announce the intentions for the Universal Prayer and, in the absence of a psalmist, recite the Psalm between the readings.” When a deacon is not present, the lector “may carry the Book of the Gospels, slightly elevated.”

Sacristan: The sacristan “diligently arranges the liturgical books, the vestments, and other things that are necessary for the celebration of Mass.”

Greeter: The greeter welcomes people as they enter church.

Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister: The Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister reverently distributes the Holy Eucharist when assistance is needed by the Ordinary Ministers, also known as bishops, priests, and deacons.

Already serving as a Lector, Sacristan, Greeter, or Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister?

Current Liturgical Ministers may access their account in the Ministry Scheduler Program by clicking here. This program is used by all church sites except for Our Risen Savior to schedule weekend liturgical ministers. Ministers can access their schedule, request substitutes, sign up for open spots, enter dates they are not available, and view rosters.
