First Communion - Christian Formation

Preparing to receive Jesus through the Sacrament of the Eucharist (Communion) for the first time is an exciting time. It is a time for focus on Jesus, faith, and family. Children of the Parish who are in second grade-fourth grade and who have received their First Reconciliation are invited to begin the formal preparation to receive their First Eucharist. In order to register for First Eucharist, the child must meet the requirements (listed below). If your child is older than fourth grade, please contact the Elementary or High School Formation Coordinator at (920) 921-0580.

About this Preparation

Holy Family's preparation for Eucharist is set up similarly to that of the preparation for Reconciliation. Parents and children prepare mostly at home--in conjunction with Religious Education classes through Holy Family or classes at St. Mary's Springs Academy--using a workbook since it is the home where each child's faith is most cultivated. The workbook has eight lessons which will guide families through familiar Bible stories, offer discussion points, and suggest activities for you and your child while on this journey. The finished book is brought to the final parent/child class. In order to support parents during this time, the parish offers two parent-child workshops and one separate parent meeting. More information is mailed to parents a few weeks before the beginning of the preparation.

Of vital importance to a child's preparation is the family's participation at Mass on a weekly basis. The Mass is a revelation and the greatest expression of the Catholic faith. It is here that the preparation for this sacrament comes alive.

Requirements to start preparation

  • Child can be a second-fourth grade student and must have already prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation (please contact Elementary or High School Formation coordinator at 921-0580 for older children or adults).
  • Children must have attended Faith Formation classes during the summer program, attends St. Mary’s Springs Academy, or is attending the yearly religious education program as they prepare for this Sacrament.
  • Baptismal Certificate: The parish needs a record of your child’s Baptism. Please provide a copy of your child’s Baptismal certificate, even if your child was baptized at Holy Family. If you cannot find a copy of your child’s certificate, please contact the parish where he/she was baptized and ask them to mail a copy to Holy Family Parish, 271 Fourth Street Way, Fond du Lac, WI 54937. If your child was baptized at one of the Holy Family sites and you need a new certificate, please contact us at info@hffdl.org with your child’s name, month, and year they were baptized.  If your child was baptized in another faith tradition, you must contact the Christian Formation office before the start of the preparation.

First Reconciliation - Christian Formation

Preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation (also known as Penance) for the first time is an exciting time. It is a time for focus on God's mercy, how we forgive among our family, friends, and community, and how we celebrate forgiveness. Children of the parish who are in second-fourth grade and who are baptized are invited to begin the formal preparation to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation through this fall course (if your child needs to be baptized, please contact the Director of Christian Formation at 921-0580). In order to register for this preparation, the children must meet the requirements (listed below) and the family must submit a registration form and $30 fee (this fee is both for Reconciliation and First Communion, which happens in spring).

About this Preparation

Holy Family's preparation for Reconciliation is set up for parents and children to prepare mostly at home (in conjunction with Religious Educations classes through Holy Family or classes at St. Mary's Springs Academy) using a workbook since it is the home where each child's faith is most cultivated. The workbook has six lessons which will guide families through the preparation process, offer discussion points, and suggest activities for you and your child while on this journey. The finished book is brought to the final parent/child class. In order to support parents during this time, the parish offers two workshops for both parents and children and one program exclusively for parents for a total of three experiences. More information is mailed to parents typically in July (if you did not receive information in the mail, please check the Holy Family/Areas of Ministry/Christian Formation/Reconciliation/First Communion). Of vital importance to a child's preparation is the family's participation at Mass on a weekly basis. The Mass is a revelation and the greatest expression of the Catholic faith. It is where as a community we offer as a sacrifice our successes and failures and where God accepts them with great joy guiding us to a deeper relationship with Him.

Things to know for Reconciliation

A GUIDE TO CONFESSION

How to go to Confession

  1. You always have the option to go to confession anonymously, that is, behind a screen or face to face, if you so desire.
  2. After the priest greets you in the name of Christ, make the sign of the cross. He may choose to recite a reading from Scripture, after which you say: "Bless me Father for I have sinned. It has been (state how long) since my last confession or this is my first confession. I am in 2nd grade. These are my sins."
  3. Tell your sins simply and honestly to the priest. You might even want to discuss the circumstances and the root causes of your sins and ask the priest for advice or direction.
  4. Listen to the advice the priest gives you and accept the penance (possibly a prayer) from him. Then make an Act of Contrition for your sins.
  5. The priest will then dismiss you with the words of praise: "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good. You respond: "For His mercy endures forever." The priest will then conclude with: "The Lord has freed you from your sins. Go in peace." And you respond by saying: "Thanks be to God."
  6. Spend some time with Our Lord thanking and praising Him for the gift of His mercy. Try to perform your penance as soon as possible.

    Based on http://www.ncregister.com/info/confession_guide_for_children
The following prayers:
  • Sign of the Cross
  • Our Father
  • Hail Mary
  • Glory Be
  • Act of Contrition
By knowing these prayers, you will be both confident and ready to go to Reconciliation and prepared for a possible prayer for a penance.
