Holy Family to welcome three new priests this June

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

This past February, I shared with you that Archbishop Grob had called Fr. Patrick Behling, Fr. Matthew Kirk, Fr. Kevin Tanel, and Fr. Fernando Torres to take on new assignments within the Archdiocese of Milwaukee beginning in June. We have learned that Fr. Behling will continue his ministry at Lumen Christi Parish in Mequon, Fr. Kirk at Saint John XXIII Parish in Port Washington, Fr. Tanel at Saint Alphonsus Parish in Greendale, and Fr. Torres at Corpus Christi Parish in Waukesha.

Although it will be difficult to see them leave our parish, let us be heartened by news from the Archdiocese that three new priests will join our parish in June as well. Effective June 16, we will welcome Fr. Craig Richter, and Transitional Deacon Alex Becker and Transitional Deacon Nick Waddell, who will both be ordained next month.

Fr. Richter was raised in Waukesha, where he attended St. John Neumann Parish and Catholic schools from elementary through high school. As a teen attending the Wisconsin Catholic Youth Rally, he had an experience during Adoration which changed his life. The emcee asked for anyone who felt called to serve the Church to stand, and he felt an electric jolt go through his body, which convinced him he would serve the Church in some way. While the priesthood crossed his mind, he instead set his sights on a career and family. At the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, he majored in accounting, and after graduation, took a position with a business consulting firm.

As he traveled the country for his job, he realized that he was neglecting the things most important to him: his faith, loved ones, and health. He began to reconnect to his faith and after a long-term relationship ended, he felt called to discern whether he should pursue the Priesthood. Soon, he had an answer and enrolled in the seminary. Fr. Richter was ordained in May 2024 in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee as part of one of the largest ordination classes in the country. He served as an Associate Pastor at the Catholic Community in Central Racine, which includes eight churches. He is also fluent in Spanish.   

From Port Washington, Deacon Becker first developed his faith with his parents, brother, and sister. While attending UW-Madison, he felt as though he lost the faith he had as child, but found it reinvigorated at the St. Paul’s Catholic Student Center where he had a reversion in his Catholic identity and faith. When he graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, he found himself drawn to becoming a missionary. While he had final interviews at Milwaukee Tool, Disney, and Ford, he decided to take a one-year internship at the center.

It was then he began discerning his vocation. After applying for internships with Focus and as a Walt Disney World Mechanical Engineer, Deacon Becker chose to begin his career at Disney in Orlando. During his time there, he grew in faith and prayer, and applied for a volunteer position as a Youth Minister at a local church. While in Adoration, he was overcome with a feeling of peace and welcome and realized it was time for him to discern his call to the Priesthood. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family and golfing.  

Deacon Waddell grew up in a Catholic family, attending Mass every Sunday and regularly praying the family Rosary. He attended Catholic school most of his life, which he credits with allowing him to grow in love of the Truth of the Catholic faith.

“At the heart of the Christian life is the encounter with a person – Jesus,” he said. “After this encounter, everything changes and everything has meaning. When we feel lost, alone or afraid, we need only to return to Him to regain our peace.” 

While studying at the University of Mary, he fostered relationships which helped to strengthen his faith, and it was during his study abroad experience in Rome that he began to discern a call to the Priesthood. Although initially reluctant, the desire to become a priest emerged as he worked as a missionary in New York and he followed Christ’s call. In his free time, he enjoys reading and spending time with friends as well as being outdoors.

During this time of transition, we ask that you keep all of our priests in your prayers as they prepare for their new assignments both here and at other parishes in the Archdiocese. Please also pray for Deacon Becker and Deacon Waddell as they approach their ordination.

El pasado mes de febrero, les comuniqué que el Arzobispo Grob había llamado a los Padres Patrick Behling, Matthew Kirk, Kevin Tanel y Fernando Torres para asumir nuevas asignaciones dentro de la Arquidiócesis de Milwaukee, a partir del mes de junio. Hemos sabido que el Padre Behling continuará su ministerio en la Parroquia Lumen Christi en Mequon; el Padre Kirk, en la Parroquia San Juan XXIII en Port Washington; el Padre Tanel, en la Parroquia San Alfonso en Greendale; y el Padre Torres, en la Parroquia Corpus Christi en Waukesha.

Aunque será difícil verlos partir de nuestra parroquia, consolémonos con la noticia proveniente de la Arquidiócesis de que tres nuevos sacerdotes se unirán también a nuestra comunidad parroquial en junio. A partir del 16 de junio, daremos la bienvenida al Padre Craig Richter, así como a los diáconos transitorios Alex Becker y Nick Waddell, quienes serán ordenados sacerdotes el próximo mes.

El Padre Richter creció en Waukesha, donde asistió a la Parroquia San Juan Neumann y a escuelas católicas desde la educación primaria hasta la secundaria. Siendo adolescente, durante su asistencia al Encuentro de Jóvenes Católicos de Wisconsin, tuvo una experiencia durante la Adoración Eucarística que transformó su vida. El presentador pidió que se pusieran de pie todos aquellos que sintieran el llamado a servir a la Iglesia; en ese instante, él sintió una descarga eléctrica recorrer su cuerpo, lo cual le convenció de que, de alguna manera, serviría a la Iglesia. Si bien la idea del sacerdocio cruzó por su mente, decidió enfocar sus esfuerzos en desarrollar una carrera profesional y formar una familia. En la Universidad de Minnesota, en Minneapolis, se especializó en contabilidad y, tras graduarse, aceptó un puesto en una firma de consultoría empresarial.

Mientras viajaba por todo el país debido a su trabajo, se percató de que estaba descuidando aquello que consideraba más importante: su fe, sus seres queridos y su salud. Comenzó entonces a retomar su conexión con la fe y, tras el fin de una relación sentimental de larga duración, sintió el llamado a discernir si debía emprender el camino hacia el sacerdocio. Poco después, obtuvo su respuesta y se matriculó en el seminario. El Padre Richter fue ordenado sacerdote en mayo de 2024 en la Arquidiócesis de Milwaukee, formando parte de una de las promociones de ordenación más numerosas del país. Ejerció su ministerio como Vicario Parroquial en la Comunidad Católica del centro de Racine, la cual abarca ocho iglesias. Asimismo, habla español con fluidez.

Originario de Port Washington, el diácono Becker cultivó su fe inicialmente junto a sus padres, su hermano y su hermana. Mientras asistía a la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison), sintió como si hubiera perdido la fe que tenía de niño; sin embargo, la encontró revitalizada en el Centro Católico para Estudiantes St. Paul, donde experimentó una renovación de su identidad y fe católicas. Al graduarse de la UW-Madison con un título en Ingeniería Mecánica, se sintió atraído por la idea de convertirse en misionero. A pesar de haber llegado a las entrevistas finales para puestos en Milwaukee Tool, Disney y Ford, decidió aceptar una pasantía de un año en dicho centro.

Fue entonces cuando comenzó a discernir su vocación. Tras postularse a pasantías con la organización FOCUS y para un puesto como Ingeniero Mecánico en Walt Disney World, el diácono Becker optó por iniciar su carrera profesional en Disney, en Orlando. Durante su estancia allí, creció en fe y oración, y solicitó un puesto voluntario como ministro de pastoral juvenil en una iglesia local. Mientras se encontraba en Adoración Eucarística, se vio embargado por una profunda sensación de paz y acogida, y comprendió que había llegado el momento de discernir su llamado al sacerdocio. En su tiempo libre, disfruta pasando tiempo con su familia y jugando al golf.
El diácono Waddell creció en el seno de una familia católica, asistiendo a Misa todos los domingos y rezando habitualmente el Rosario en familia. Asistió a escuelas católicas durante la mayor parte de su vida, hecho al que atribuye el haber podido crecer en el amor por la Verdad de la fe católica.

«En el corazón de la vida cristiana se encuentra el encuentro con una persona: Jesús», afirmó. «Tras este encuentro, todo cambia y todo adquiere sentido. Cuando nos sentimos perdidos, solos o temerosos, basta con volver a Él para recuperar nuestra paz».

Mientras estudiaba en la Universidad de Mary, cultivó relaciones que contribuyeron a fortalecer su fe; fue precisamente durante su experiencia de estudios en el extranjero, en Roma, cuando comenzó a discernir un llamado al sacerdocio. Aunque al principio se mostró reticente, el deseo de convertirse en sacerdote fue surgiendo a medida que trabajaba como misionero en Nueva York, hasta que finalmente siguió el llamado de Cristo. En su tiempo libre, disfruta leyendo, pasando tiempo con sus amigos y realizando actividades al aire libre.
Durante este periodo de transición, les pedimos que tengan presentes en sus oraciones a todos nuestros sacerdotes, mientras se preparan para asumir sus nuevas asignaciones, tanto aquí como en otras parroquias de la Arquidiócesis. Por favor, oren también por el diácono Becker y el diácono Waddell, a medida que se acerca su ordenación.
